Customize a milestone plan

Adjust milestone levels, XP requirements, booking form names, translations, and customer-facing content.

Viking includes standard milestone plans that work for most schools without any changes.

If your teaching programme uses different levels, terminology or XP requirements, you can customize a milestone plan under Settings → Milestones.

Before changing a standard plan, review the full structure first. The order of the levels cannot be changed afterwards.

Open a milestone plan

Go to:

Settings → Milestones

Select the plan you want to edit.

The plan shows its milestones and the settings for each level, including:

  • Title
  • Short name
  • Booking form name
  • XP required to complete this milestone
  • Description
  • Screenshot

Set up the levels in the correct order

The order of the milestones determines the progression through the plan.

Make sure you create the levels in the correct order from the start. Viking does not let you rearrange the order of existing levels afterwards.

This is especially important when creating your own milestone plan.

Change the milestone title

Title is the main name of the milestone shown to customers in My Progress.

Use a title that clearly describes the level or stage of the activity.

Set the short name

Short name is the compact level name shown to planners.

For example:

  • L1 for a kitesurfing level
  • S1 for a surfing level

When a milestone plan is active, this short name is used instead of displaying only the underlying XP value.

Set the booking form name

Booking form name is the level description customers can select when they indicate their existing experience in the booking form.

When a customer selects their own experience level during booking, Viking also indicates this in the Daily overview so the school can see that the level was supplied by the customer.

Use wording that customers can understand without knowing your internal level structure.

Set the XP requirement

Use XP required to complete this milestone to determine how much experience a customer needs to reach that level.

The value can be set freely.

For example:

  • Level 1 → 1 XP
  • Level 2 → 2 XP
  • Level 3 → 3 XP

You can also require several completed lessons before the next level is reached.

For example:

  • Level 1 → 1 XP
  • Level 2 → 3 XP
  • Level 3 → 5 XP

Because every completed lesson adds 1 XP, the XP requirements determine when customers progress through the milestone plan.

For more about this relationship, see Understand experience levels.

Add a description and screenshot

Description provides additional information about the milestone in My Progress.

The Screenshot is used as the main image for the milestone in the customer-facing progress view.

Keep these aligned with the level and the information customers will see after opening it.

Add translations

If your system uses multiple languages, you can add translated milestone content.

The following fields can be translated:

  • Title
  • Description
  • Booking form name

Review each language separately after changing the original milestone content.

Edit the information page

Each milestone can also have its own customer-facing information or theory page.

After changing the milestone settings, use:

Save changes and edit information page

This saves the milestone and opens the content editor for that specific level.

The information page is managed separately from the milestone settings.

For editing that content, see Customize milestone information pages.

Create your own milestone plan

You can also create a new milestone plan from Settings → Milestones.

Use this when the standard Viking plans do not match your activity or teaching structure.

Before building the plan, decide:

  • how many levels you need;
  • their order;
  • the short names you want planners to see;
  • how much XP each level should require;
  • which experience options customers should see during booking.

Because levels cannot be reordered afterwards, define the progression before creating the plan.

After creating the plan, connect it to the relevant products under Settings → Products.

Changes to standard Viking plans

Once you customize a standard Viking milestone plan, Viking can no longer automatically update that plan with future default content.

Your custom changes remain in place.

If you later want to return the plan to the Viking default, contact Viking Support. Schools cannot reset a customized plan themselves.

For this reason, only customize a standard plan when the changes are actually useful for your teaching programme.

Review your milestone content

Your school is responsible for reviewing the milestone and instructional content you make available to customers.

When changing titles, descriptions, progression or information pages, make sure the content matches how your school actually teaches the activity.
