Understand course activity and occupancy

Understand the Courses report, including unique students, student sessions, instructor sessions, and occupancy rates.

The Courses report shows how many students have taken lessons, how often lessons were taught, and how fully those lessons were booked.

Use it to review lesson activity and occupancy across your products.

Open the Courses report

  1. Go to Reports → Courses.
  2. Select the date range you want to review.
  3. Optionally, filter by Product category, Product, Location, or Student language.

The report groups results by product category, with individual products and category totals underneath.

Understand the report columns

ColumnWhat it means
StudentsThe number of unique students who took lessons during the selected period.
Number of student sessionsThe total number of lessons taken by students. One student can count multiple times.
Course sessionsThe number of instructor teaching sessions during the selected period.
Occupancy rateHow fully the teaching sessions were booked, calculated using the group size configured for the product.

Students versus student sessions

A student who takes three lessons during the selected period counts as:

  • 1 student
  • 3 student sessions

This distinction helps you see both how many individual students you taught and how many lessons they attended.

Student sessions versus course sessions

One group lesson can include several students.

For example, if one instructor teaches a group lesson with four students, that represents:

  • 4 student sessions
  • 1 course session

The number of student sessions can therefore be much higher than the number of course sessions.

Understand occupancy rate

Occupancy rate helps you understand how much of your available lesson capacity is being used.

It is calculated using the product's configured group size and the teaching sessions during the selected period.

A higher percentage generally indicates that more of the available places were filled.

Can occupancy exceed 100%?

Yes. An occupancy rate above 100% is possible when:

  • An instructor is overbooked.
  • Courses have been scheduled without an assigned instructor.

An occupancy rate above 100% does not automatically mean the report is incorrect. Check the underlying lesson planning if the result is unexpected.

Compare products and categories

The report shows statistics for individual products, along with category totals.

For example, you can compare kitesurfing group lessons with surfing lessons or SUP tours to see differences in student activity and occupancy.

Note: Courses measures lesson activity, not bookings made or payments received during the selected period.

For booking values, use Reports → Revenue. For individual payments, use Reports → Transactions.
