External tracking settings

Januari 2020 | New tracking is implemented

The new tracking only works with the new pop-up booking forms, not with the embedded forms.

What to track

We've built this functionality for conversion tracking, it is not meant to synchronise revenue flows across platforms.

What do we measure?

We measure completed bookings, not completed payments. Why?

Every center can choose their payment form in Viking:

  • No internet payments
  • Partial internet payments
  • Deposit internet payments
  • Full internet payments

By measuring bookings and not payments we can provide tracking for everybody.

How does it work?

Note: To implement tracking functionality you need Google Tag Manager knowledge, Viking knowledge to make test bookings and administrator acces to your website

The confirmation / payment will now be opened in a new window when the (new) widget is used. In the host site a Google Tag Manager event is generated with:

event = "viking_conversion",
price = price in euros,
product_id,
product_variant_id,
product_type = course / rental / bundle / simplecamp

Before starting, make sure to add the 'Google Tag Manager ID' to your Viking system. Go to Settings - Marketing with a system manager account to do so.

We recommend to not use the settings below anymore. We recommend to use Google Tag Manager on your own website for conversion tracking. Individual Google Adwords tracking and Facebook tracking are no longer supported. This can be achieved by using the new Google Tag Manager tracking.

How does the tracking work?

If a booking is placed from the own site, so via the widget, as soon as the visitor clicks on the Book Now button, a hit is reported to Google Analytics via the tracker as set on your own site (eg GA Wordpress plugin).

Some important things to know:

  • This only works if your site is HTTPS.
  • It will ONLY measure bookings made from the widget on your website.
    All other bookings, from any forms that are not on your website, can not be measured.
  • Some browsers use Ad blocking (https://moz.com/blog/analytics-black-holes). In this case your website cannot send the Property ID to VIKING. There is a fallback in VIKING when this happens: Go to settings, marketing and add your Property ID.
  • A hit to 1 property will only be send once, never double, even if you set the property ID in the settings of VIKING.

Receive data

To receive data, you only have to enter the Tracking ID in the marketing settings of VIKING.

After completing the booking form an Analytics event will be sent with category = Booking, action = Sale, label = Product name / Product variant / # days / # students, value = total amount of the booking, data Source = Viking, referer = URL of the page the widget was embedded in, if available,(Page) title = name of the booking form used.

Making goals

However, if you want to see events (to get measurements within Google ads, for example) then further steps are needed, namely:

  1. go to the relevant data view in analytics (after you have clicked on settings on the bottom left of the gear, the right-most column)
  2. there you click on 'Goals' and then on 'new goal'
  3. with target configuration you choose 'adapted'
  4. in the target description you choose 'event'
  5. then add the 'target details'.
  6. We have a goal!

Make sure your Google Analytics and Google Ads are linked:

Import goals in Google Ads:

When a goal is configured in Google Analytics it can (if the link between Google Ads and Analytics and vice versa has been created) be imported to Google Ads as follows:

  1. Log in to Google Ads
  2. Go to 'Tools' at the top right and then to 'measurements' and below to 'conversions'
  3. Next, click on the blue plus in the top left to add a new conversion action
  4. You choose import and Google Analytics
  5. Next, choose the goal with the name you gave it in Analytics
