Set up multi-person rental products

Let customers book rental items instead of selecting the number of participants

Use this setup for rental products where customers should choose the number of items they want to rent instead of the number of participants, such as double kayaks, Mega SUPs, or dinghies.

Rental products use participant terminology by default. For multi-person rentals, you can change the rental-specific booking form text to show items instead. You then configure the product variants so their pricing matches the number of items selected.

On this page

Change the rental booking form text

Go to Settings → Translations and find the following three rental-specific strings:

  • Number of participants → Number of items
    Key: booking.form.participants_rental
  • 1 participant → 1 item
    Key: booking.form.1_participant_rental
  • %d participants → %d items
    Key: booking.form.n_participants_rental
Only change the rental-specific strings. Similar strings are used for Course products and should remain unchanged.

After this change, customers will see the number of items in the booking form. Viking still uses the regular participant and course terminology in the product and variant settings.

Configure variants for the number of items

Update the variants of your Rental products so the participant range represents the number of rental items shown to the customer.

For example, if a Mega SUP is booked and priced per item, configure the variant for 1 when the customer books one Mega SUP, 2 for two Mega SUPs, and so on. Set the corresponding price for each range.

The labels in Viking still refer to participants, but for this setup you should interpret that value as the number of items selected in the booking form.

For more information about configuring variants and pricing, see Set up products and variants.

Review your other rental products

This change applies to all Rental-type products. You cannot show “participants” for one Rental product and “items” for another using these translations.

Review all of your Rental products after changing the translations. Make sure that:

  • using “items” makes sense for the product;
  • the variant ranges match the number of items customers can select;
  • the prices are correct for each number of items.

For single-person rental items such as SUPs or surfboards, one item can still represent one person. Check the booking form to make sure this remains clear for customers.

Test the booking form

Open the booking form and test the Rental products affected by the change.

Check that:

  • the booking form shows items instead of participants;
  • customers can select the intended number of items;
  • the correct price is shown for each quantity;
  • other Rental products still make sense with the new terminology.

Once these checks are correct, customers can book multi-person rental equipment based on the number of items instead of the number of participants.
